Voluntary Union Recognitions Known to the NLRB

Voluntary recognitions of unions by private-sector employers, as reported to the National Labor Relations Board. Under Section 9 of the National Labor Relations Act, employers may voluntarily recognize a union for collective bargaining without an election; when they do, they notify the NLRB using Form NLRB-5581 and the agency posts a public notice during which other parties may challenge the recognition.

Each row is a single recognition: the employer, the union, the bargaining unit (description and headcount), the NLRB regional office, and the relevant procedural dates (recognition, notice, posting, and any subsequent representation-case petition). The data was obtained from the NLRB via Freedom of Information Act requests and covers 2002 through 2024.
